Foundation for Puget Sound, Seattle, WA. February-March 2009
Hired by the Foundation for Puget Sound, which supports the Puget Sound Partnership, a Washington State agency established to lead efforts to protect and restore Puget Sound. Recommended the framework for the communications strategy needed to implement the Puget Sound Partnership’s Action Agenda. Work involved a review of all communications plans to date; identifying the communications needs; and creating a framework and a roadmap for implementing a communications plan tied to the implementation of the Action Agenda. Qvisory, Inc., Seattle, WA. October 2006-December 2008
Qvisory is a national nonprofit organization patterned after the AARP. Its mission is to help young Americans achieve their money, work, and health goals. Initially hired as a consultant to start the enterprise, which consists of three entities: a 501(c)(4) lobbying organization, a 501(c)(3) Education Fund, and a for-profit taxable subsidiary. Asked to participate in the nationwide search for the permanent Executive Director and was chosen for that role in March 2007. See description of responsibilities and accomplishments here.
Crosscut, Seattle, WA. August 2005-December 2006
Served as a member of the initial group of civic leaders and journalists who banded together to create a local online-only news and blog service of daily digests and commentary on the news, politics, economics, arts, culture, and life of the metropolitan region within the 60-mile radius of Seattle, WA. Became the project manager for the start-up operations that named, branded, designed, and created Crosscut, LLC. Wrote initial business plan. See here for full scope of work.
Air America Radio, New York City, NY. February, 2005-September 2006
Served in two roles: (1) Interim Internet Operations Director (February-August 2005)–led the effort to overhaul, redesign, and move the Air America Radio website that at the time was receiving over 2.5 million visitors a month. Work resulted in the website residing on a stable and flexible platform with considerably enhanced functionality; staff trained in the use of content management systems; a business plan to direct technical investments to drive revenue. (2) Chief of Staff to the Chairman of the Board (November 2005-September 2006)–staffed all Board meetings; managed fundraising rounds; conducted CEO search, among other tasks. Kinetic Books, Seattle, WA. May-December 2004
Oversaw the development and initial online promotion of the website for this Seattle-based company that offers digital physics and math curricula, including website management; content creation; online marketing; and project management of the site’s launch, as well as all keyword advertising and search engine optimization. The result was a clean, professional, optimized website that enabled the company to sell its digital curricula online. Full scope of work can be seen here.
The Humane Society of the US, Gaithersburg, MD. January 2004-March 2005
Led a major RFP process for this Gaithersburg, MD-based nonprofit organization that, with nearly 10 million members, is the nation’s largest and most powerful animal protection organization. Chose the technology partner that helped The HSUS transform its capabilities to communicate with its constituents, engage its activists, and raise significant amounts of money online. RealImpact, Seattle, WA. May 1996-August 2003
RealImpact was a full-service web and streaming media development, design, and hosting shop created in the early days of the Internet dedicated to providing high-quality consulting services to progressive organizations. Served 183 clients with a wide range of web, strategic consulting, and streaming media services, as well as path-breaking online marketing tools.
Launched the first ever streaming media Internet advocacy campaign on Earth Day in 1998 with actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus to sign up e-mail activists for Environmental Defense. Live webcast Vice President Al Gore’s announcement of his candidacy for President, the first time the Internet was used to announce a political candidacy.
